Cleaning & Prevention

Dentistry is founded on the principle of prevention. All patients are recommended biannual cleanings and examinations. Not only do they help you quash dental problems before they arise, they leave your gums healthier, and your teeth cleaner and whiter.

A professional cleaning removes hard plaque that cannot be removed by brushing and flossing alone. It also involves a fluoride treatment and polish to help protect and soothe your teeth and gums. Even if you haven’t had a cleaning in over two years, it’s never too late to treat your teeth.

Fillings are needed when tooth decay has caused a hole (cavity) to form on a tooth surface. Without a filling, the cavity will get worse, possibly causing pain and then an abscess. This may lead to even more severe problems, such as bone loss. Speak to your dentist about your filling material options.

Tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over a tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and improve its appearance. The crowns are cemented into place to fully encase the entire visible portion of the tooth. It lies at and above the gum line for a seamless appearance and requires no additional maintenance.

A dental crown may be needed in the following situations:

1. To protect a weak tooth from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth
2. To restore an already broken tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down
3. To cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn’t a lot of tooth left
4. To hold a dental bridge in place
5. To cover misshaped or severely discolored teeth
6. To cover a dental implant
7. To make a cosmetic modification

Custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve the appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their color, shape, size, or length. They may be used in the following situations:

  1. Teeth that are discolored — either because of stains, excessive fluoride or other causes; or the presence of large resin fillings that have discolored the tooth

  2. Teeth that are worn down

  3. Teeth that are chipped or broken

  4. Teeth that are misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped (for example, have craters or bulges in them)

  5. Teeth with gaps between them (to close the space between these teeth)

Despite improvements in dental care, millions of Americans suffer tooth loss – mostly due to tooth decay, gingivitis (gum disease), or injury. For many years, the only treatment options available for people with missing teeth were bridges and dentures. But today, dental implants are available at a discounted fee at Half Price Dental.

Root Canals

Treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is properly cleaned and sealed. Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses may form.

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges literally bridge the gap created by one or more missing teeth. It is made up of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap — these two or more anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth — and a false tooth/teeth in between. Dental bridges are supported by natural teeth or implants.

A tooth extraction, or exodontia, is the removal of a tooth. Reasons for a tooth extraction include decayed or broken teeth or possibly to make room for other teeth or an orthodontic treatment.
